Tunisia is the second African country to play host to TICAD after Kenya in 2016. The official announcement was made by the Japanese embassy in Tunis on July 16, 2020.

Tunisia obtained the approval to play host to the conference at the end of the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union held in Addis Ababa on February 9-10.
