Jerandi, Japan's Hayashi focus on preparations for TICAD8

Progress in preparations for the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8) which Tunisia will host next August 27-28 was at heart of a virtual meeting held on 28 March 2022 between Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othmane Jerandi and his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Tunisia is fully ready to play host to this large-scale event, the FM said, and the State had provided all available means to ensure its success.

Issues on the agenda of the TICAD8 Ministerial Prepatatory Meeting held via video conference on March 26-27 were discussed, a Foreign Ministry press release reads. This includes economic development challenges in Africa, peace and security in the world and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on African economies.

Jerandi and Hayashi agreed to carry on consultations on these issues pending the holding of the TICAD8.

Hayashi commended Tunisia's efforts and ongoing coordination with Japanese authorities, partners and co-organisers of this event.

Jerandi and Hayashi also emphasised the need to develop the bilateral regulatory framework to increase Japanese investments in Tunisia as well as trade.

The talk also focused on the Russian-Ukrainian war and its repercussions on global security and peace.

The FMs said there is need to resolve current crises as part of UN mechanisms and carry on bilateral consultations while building on their experience as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council or as part of Tunisia's current membership of the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC).
